What Are The Causes Of Congestive Heart Failure?

The heart is one of the most vital organs of a human body. It is responsible for continuous supply of fresh blood to all parts of the bodies, through its pumping action. In other words, all the blood running and circulating in arteries and veins of a human body is pumped through the heart. For uninterrupted blood circulation, a healthy heart performing its pumping action is essential.

Under normal circumstances, the heart keeps on functioning without any interruption but a stage may come in the life of the person when the heart fails to perform its exclusive role in pumping blood throughout the body. This may happen due to many reasons. One such condition or disease is called “Congestive Heart Failure”.

Heart pain

If due to some reasons or the other, fluid starts accumulating around the heart, the ventricles become unable to pump required amount of blood. Resultantly, blood and fluids start accumulating in lungs, abdomen or other lower parts of the body. This causes CHF or the Congestive Heart Failure. Most common symptoms of CHF or Congestive Heart Failure may be Fatigue, Breath shortness and swelling of legs or ankles.

As such, the CHF is quite a serious threat to your life and it is much more important that you must have some basic information and knowledge about this disease, so as to protect your life. Here we will discuss briefly, What are the Causes of Congestive Heart Failure

Causes Of Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)

The heart has to perform its prime role of supply of fresh blood to the entire body. If it stops doing that, human life is under serious threat. While this condition of the heart is termed as Congestive Heart Failure or CHF, there is another similar condition that is known as Congenital Heart Failure. Congenital Heart Failure is a result of any natural defect at the time of birth due to which heart fails to perform efficiently. This may also lead to CHF at any later stage.

However, most common reasons of CHF may be as under:

High Blood Pressure

Blood pressure of a healthy young person is considered as 120/80, which can vary to some extent depending on the lifestyle and age of the person. But when blood pressure starts increasing drastically, it is rated as High Blood Pressure, such as 180/100 or 180/110 may be a serious issue. Normally the high blood pressure cannot be noticed easily. It is therefore important that you should make it a routine to get your blood pressure checked often.

High Blood Pressure is known to cause various serious medical threats, CHF being one of those. People having high blood pressure are most likely to be a victim of CHF.

High Blood Pressure

Coronary Heart Disease

When fats start accumulating inside the walls of heart arteries, it starts blocking the blood circulation to heart muscles. If left unattended for a long period, the heart muscles enter into a dying phase, which ultimately results in a heart attack or myocardial infarction.

Dilated Cardiomyopathy

This condition is also related to the heart muscles. This occurs when ventricles of the heart are enlarged, which may result in Congestive Heart Failure. If left unattended or it cannot be cured through normal medication, the person suffering from this disease may have to go for the heart transplant.

Diabetes is a medical condition where glucose level starts rising in human blood. This is a result of absence or deficiency of Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas. Insulin is responsible for controlling and reducing the glucose level of human blood. In case of both types of Diabetes (the one where no insulin is produced and the other where human body develops resistance to the insulin), nervous system, kidneys or eyes can be severely damaged. It may also lead to various heart diseases including the CHF.

The thyroid gland produces a hormone known as Thyroxine, which is responsible to control the metabolic activities of the human system. When production of thyroxine is increased due to some reasons, the condition is termed as Hyperthyroidism. Most common symptoms are intolerance against heat, nervousness, weight gain and increased heartbeat. This condition may also lead to CHF.

Heart Valves

Human heart comprises of four compartments or chambers, which are interconnected with four valves. These valves control the blood flow and prevent the blood from back flow. Sometimes one or more of these four valves get narrowed to an extent where it fails to control the back flow of blood. This condition of heart valves may also result in Congestive Heart Failure. Heart Valve disease may occur at any stage of your life or it may be caused due to a birth defect in infants.

Kidney Failure

Kidneys are responsible for purifying the blood, through filtering out the excess water and waste from it, which is ultimately thrown out of the body through urination. Kidneys play an important role in controlling the blood pressure as well. Kidney failure may also lead to Congestive Heart Failure. Experts say that 25% people suffering from kidney failure may also end up with CHF.

Pericarditis, Hemochromatosis, Congenital Heart Disease, Myocarditis and Amyloidosis are also known for causing Congestive Heart Failure.

Chances Of Survival

If properly treated and precautionary measures adopted as per your doctor’s advice, you can have a fair chance of surviving for more than five years. However, if the disease is in advanced stages, this period may be lesser.

To improve your survival chances you need to change your lifestyle and diet. Quit Smoking, avoid to take processed foods, reduce carbohydrate intake and increase walking. This may help you a lot towards your life expectancy.
