We have heard the term mixture in our Chemistry books or in the kitchen, But what the mixture exactly is? A mixture is an outcome of combining two or more substances without any fixed ratio and such approach that there is no chemical reaction occurs between them.
The mixture is classified into two categories, one of them is the Homogeneous mixture, and another is the heterogeneous mixture. On mixing up the component substances retain their own identities and properties. Mixtures do not have a firm composition.
In this article, we will try to subdue the confusion illustrating the contradiction between both mixtures.
A mixture consists of a constant composition throughout is known as the homogeneous mixture. The elements are consistently distributed in a homogeneous mixture, for example, air, gasoline and ice cream, etc.
One of the common examples of the homogeneous mixture is water, it consists of different minerals and gases which are dissolved uniformly throughout the water.
The question arises here that how will you identify that the mixture is homogeneous or not? For this purpose always remember that we can’t distinguish the components of the homogeneous mixture. We can’t take out any component from homogeneous mixture once it is mixed.
A cup of tea is an utter example of Homogeneous mixture. When we dissolve sugar in tea, can we take it out? The answer is no, we can’t take out the sugar from tea once it is dissolved in it.
Just like that if we take an example of orange juice, the components orange flavor, sugar, etc is mixed up uniformly throughout, and we can’t separate any of its constituents. Using mouthwash is another example of a homogeneous mixture. A bottle of mouthwash consists of several chemicals equally distributed and none of its chemicals can be separated out.

- Blood Plasma
- Sugar water
- Salted water
Mixtures that do not have a constant composition throughout are known to be the heterogeneous mixtures. The components are not continually distributed In the heterogeneous mixture, for example, Rock, soil, and wood etc.
We eat salad almost daily and that is also a perfect example of a heterogeneous mixture. It consists of several ingredients and we can easily recognize them because they are not uniformly distributed.
As we have described that to identify the homogeneous mixture we see that the substances are not distinguishable. Similarly, how can we identify that the mixture is heterogeneous?
A heterogeneous mixture contains substances that can be easily separated. In heterogeneous mixture, the substances are not dissolved thoroughly and each component has its own property, therefore, components can be separated out easily.
What if we dissolve some sand in the water? After a while, all the sand particles would be settled down at the rear of the water and we can recognize them separately. So we would call this mixture a heterogeneous mixture.
Pizza, one of the most lovable food in the world is also a perfect example of a heterogeneous mixture. Just by casting a glance at pizza we can easily recognize its ingredients like cheese, pepperoni, mushrooms, olives, and chicken, etc.
Some of the examples of heterogeneous mixture are
- Fruit loop cereal
- Nuts in a bowl
- Rock in the sand at beach
- Oil in water
Main Difference between Homogeneous and Heterogeneous mixture
Assume you have bestowed a mixture and you are asked to recognize whether this mixture is homogeneous or Heterogeneous?
The main conflict between them is that all the components are dissolved and cannot be taken out in a homogeneous mixture while in Heterogeneous mixture components are not dissolved equally and we can separate them.
If you cannot recognize the elements of a mixture then that is a homogeneous mixture and if you can see its components then it will be a heterogeneous mixture.
A mixture consists of sugar in water is a homogeneous mixture because we can’t see particles of sugar in the water, as they are dissolved thoroughly.
A mixture consisting of oil in water is an example of the heterogeneous mixture as the oil cannot be mixed in the water and we can easily see them.
