Dog Fever: Just like us, dogs also get the fever. It is pretty obvious in dogs when they get sick. One way to get confirmed about your dog’s fever is by observing his nose. If it is cold and wet it means he fine. But if it is hot and dry then your dog is having a fever.
It may not be true in every case. Sometimes your dog’s fever can go without being noticed or detected. This is because their body temperature is already higher than the normal temperature of humans. So maybe you do not recognize that your dog is having a fever.
What Is A Dog Fever?
Dog’s normal body temperature is between 101 and 102.5 F. When it crosses from 103 F it means your dog is having a fever. Fever actually means that your body temperature is increased due to inflammation or any kind of infection. But this body temperature can also be because your dog is very stressed or excited.
When the body temperature of the dogs gets very high it is due to the extreme weather conditions. Maybe the weather is extremely hot or it is very humid. It is known as heat stroke or hyperthermia. Dogs temperature can also reach 106 F, this can be very serious and fatal.
Symptoms Of Dog Fever
Some most common symptoms of high temperature in dogs are listed below:
- Warm ears
- Lethargy
- Lack of energy
- Shivering
- Vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Coughing
- Dry and warm nose
- Red eyes
- Nasal discharge
- Change in mood
If you see any of these signs in your pooch, it means he is not well. You need to take him to the veterinarian. Give him proper medication to control the sickness.
Causes Of Puppy Temperature
The main cause of fever in pets is because of the inflammation or any kind of infection. Their body fights for these diseases and loses the stamina. As a result, the body temperature is increased beyond the normal level. The infections can be internal or external which include:
- Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
- Infected organs, such as kidneys or lungs
- An infected or abscessed tooth
- Ear infection
- An infected bite, scratch or cut
- An ongoing bacterial or viral disease
Intake of poisonous food sources can also lead to fever. They include:
- Antifreeze
- Human medications
- Toxic plants
- Human foods that are harmful to dogs
- Artificial sweetener
In this case, you must contact your veterinarian.
Treatment Of Dog Fever
When your dog’s fever crosses 103 degrees or more than that, first use cold water around his ears and paws. You may also use a damp cloth or towel. Keep measuring his fever. When you see a drop 103 degrees, stop using water. Now indulge him in drinking some water.
Keep on monitoring his temperature very keenly. Make sure he does not catch those degrees again. If that happens again then take him to the vet. If you see any other symptoms then contact your veterinarian. It is better that you should take him to the vet then o be sorry afterward.
Never give any human medication to your dog. It may result in any complications or maybe toxic for your pets. Human medications like aspirin or acetaminophen are not good for your pet. They can also prove to be fatal for your pet. Always contact your vet in case of high fever.
