Skin is the largest human organ whose surface area in an average adult man is 1.5 to 2.0 squares meter. Skin is meant to protect the human muscles and bones from external effects. Not just the dysfunction of skin, if there is any disease or dysfunction of other organs, it is also revealed on the skin. It shows the warning indications of various diseases.
The humans have different skin colors and skin according to the body part differs. The skin of hands and feet is thick as compared to the skin on the face. But the question arises in mind that what is the function of the skin? In this article, we will describe the main functions in detail, so read the article till the end.
Whenever there is an external attack on the body, the skin shields the body. These external attacks could be acne, injury, pressure and penetration of germs. Just because of skin the muscles and bones are saved from any harm.
The human body consists of 70% of water hence it gives vitality to skin. Skin gives us the indication of the level of water. If the amount of water decreases, the layer of skin loses its elasticity and becomes dry. We often say that the skin is dry; it means that the moisture is low.
When the water level is balanced or the skin is well moisturized, the skin becomes flexible and free of wrinkles. With good moisture, the skin cells regenerate and they renew the skin. Therefore, we should drink more water.
Lipids are the essential parts of the good nutrition when we say the need for nutrition it indicates the lack of lipids. As the skin protects by creating an impermeable layer, these lipids help the skin in this function by restoring cell membrane. Therefore, when lipids are decreased, the shielding function is enervated. And there is an increase in dehydration, loss of elasticity and the skin becomes susceptible and the result is wrinkles on face.
Living cells reproduce. This is done by mitosis which eliminates old cells and replaces them with new ones. The skin cells in the uppermost layer of skin known as epidermis layer renew themselves after every two months. Due to this, the injury or any scar is healed.
Skin balances the body temperature by releasing heat. This is done by the evaporation of secreted sweat. The sweat also eliminates the substances that are harmful.
Sebaceous glands are present in the skin, which secrete the oily and waxy substance called as sebum. Sebum is Latin word which means fat and this is made of wax esters, triglycerides, squalene, and metabolites of fat-producing cells. Skin becomes waterproofs and lubricated due to this sebum.
