One of the common personality traits in children is shyness. Feeling shy is normal but if a person is notably too shy then it can be a behavioral problem and it is hard to understand at what age it rises. It is a surprising fact that almost fifteen percent of the children suffer from the introversion under the age of six.
It is the nature of children that they hesitate when ever they face a a new situation. They feel shy when they are out of their comfort zone. But if your child hides behind anything when a stranger talks to him or he finds it difficult to participate in a group then your child is suffering from shyness.
In this article, we will describe how you can help your introverted child, so if you are interested to know some useful tips, read the article till the end.
Know The Cause
It is necessary for the parents to first, learn about all the possible reasons for shyness. Usually, the introversion arises at a very young age. This introversion combined with fear especially of the unknown which begins at school and the fear of separation from parents ultimately boosts the introversion.
A child starts to give a logical reason to his fears at the age of three years and if these fears are developed they may lead to shyness.
While some cases are also seen where shyness in the children is found to be by birth or with a genetic trait. Many children overcome this with the age as the genetic trait is not a dominant factor in this case.
Diagnose The Symptoms
After knowing the causes it is important for the parents to detect the symptoms associated with the introversion. Generally, children suffering from this, feel nervous and fearful when an unknown person talk to them and they usually hide behind the door, sofa or any known person.
They totally avoid talking to an unknown person. It costs them a lot to come out of their comfort zone for a new thing unless they are with the people they know and who do not scare them.
Besides they also find trouble in mixing up with new people and usually prefer to be alone instead of doing any group activity. Parents can notice this symptom very easily as such a child will not participate in any activity while being with other children and will be quiet.
Do Not Overprotect Your Child
The basic mistake parents do is that they overprotect their child while in the home. You can make your child feel safe but not overprotected. Whenever they did a mistake they should be realized of their mistake rather than speaking for them.
It is necessary for them to be left alone so that they can develop their own sense of relaization, could get hurt, grow and then start to learn for themselves. It is the best solution rather than overprotecting your child as it will make him weaker.
Also, the purpose behind leaving them alone is to make them stronger so they start overcoming their problems under the guidance of their parents. Keep in mind that letting your child to isolate socially will only worsen the situation.
Do Not Force Your Child
All of above, it is essential for the parents to allow their child to behave in a natural way and not to force them to act in a way that does not match their personality. There are some parents who unconsciously tend to force their child to be more social.
In this regard, they often say things like, “do not hide behind”, “say something to uncle or aunt” or “go play with other children”. By forcing you will only make the situation worse.
You must let them free to gradually realize by themselves that there is nothing to be afraid. And remember the saying “the less you say, the more you’ll achieve.”
It is the nature of a child that he imitates the things he sees. Therefore, parents who are social, open and display disinhibited behavior in the scenarios which are not ordinary, the chances are that their child will also adopt these attitudes too and will try to act same as their parents.
Look For The Opportunities
Being a parent, it is your duty to look for the opportunities to relate your child to others so that they may become less isolated and overcome their shyness and fear. In this regard, you can take your child at dinner with the children of his age.
Take him to the park every day and help him make new friends. You can also invite his friends for a sleep over. All of these things will help your child to practice social skills and with time he will be freed from introversion.
In the beginning, he may find it hard so it is your responsibility to make him feel secure but you must leave him alone so he can naturally adopt this feeling of security by himself.
Recognize His Efforts
In the last, you must try to recognize the efforts of your child so that he can overcome his fears which he assumes will be miserable. It is your obligation to appreciate and encourage your child’s positive behavior as it will help your child to stay away from introversion. In this way, he will trust himself and will feel safe while facing an unfamiliar situation.
