Change The Story
We all have a narrative or a story that shapes our self-perception and we have created it upon which our core self-image is based. In order to change that story, we have to understand where it came from and where we received the messages we tell ourselves. Whose voices are we internalizing?
Jessica Koblenz, said “Sometimes automatic negative thoughts like ‘you’re fat’ or ‘you’re lazy’ can be repeated in your mind so often that you start to believe they are true, these thoughts are learned, which means they can be unlearned. If you want to increase your self-esteem the things you need to practice are acceptance and stop comparing yourself to others. It does not mean that the other person is happy just because someone else appears happy on social media. Comparisons will only lead you to negative self-talk, as a result you will experience anxiety and depression.
This is because feelings of low self-worth can negatively affect your mental health as well as other aspects in your life, such as relationships, work, and physical health.
Channel Your Inner Rock Star
Every human being has strengths and weaknesses. Someone may be a brilliant writer, but a dreadful musician. Neither quality defines their core worth. Especially in times of doubt, recognize what are your strengths and the feelings of confidence they engender. It’s easy to make generalizations when you “mess up” or “fail” at something, but reminding yourself of the ways you rock offers a more realistic perspective of yourself.
Many studies have shown a correlation between exercise and higher self-esteem, as well as improved mental health. For at least 10 minutes a day, engage yourself in any form of recreational exercise such as running, walking, biking, swimming, or whatever the activity you enjoy the most. During a research, depressed participants were asked to exercise daily for 10 minutes.
After 10 months, they were shown to have a far lower risk of relapse than those who took anti-depressants. With exercise, the likelihood of falling into negative thoughts is reduced and there is an increase in happy factor.
By holding on to feelings of resentment or bitterness, we keep ourselves stuck in a cycle of negativity. If we have not forgiven ourselves, embarrassment will keep us in this same loop.
Schiraldi says: “Forgiving self and others has been found to improve self-esteem, If I have hurt or harmed anyone, knowingly or unknowingly, I ask forgiveness. If anyone has hurt or harmed me, knowingly or unknowingly, I forgive them. For the ways I have hurt myself, knowingly or unknowingly, I offer forgiveness.”
Remember That You Are Not Your Circumstances
Finally, learning to differentiate between your circumstances and who you are is key to self-worth. We are all born with infinite potential and equal worth as human beings. That we are anything less is a false belief that we have learned over time. Therefore, with hard work, self-destructive thoughts and beliefs can be unlearned.
Cast Aside Your Envy
Stop comparing yourself with others and do not wish to have y what others have. Instead of wasting time work on achieving what you really want. The feelings of bitterness and resentment that come along with jealousy will only make you dislike yourself and wish you were someone else
Remember that your competition is with yourself. Your life is about breaking your own limits to live your best life. You are not in competition with anyone else, they have their own goals of life and they have their unique talents to achieve them. You should plan to outdo your past, not other people.
Take The Example Of Optimists
Observe the example of those people who stand out for their social commitment and through their works improve the quality of life of those around them. They have also faced tragic moments in life but despite pains they proved themselves to be a perfect example of determination and a source of happiness for others.
