Non-verbal communication is the body language we use in our routine and it has been reported by the experts that these signals are one of the greatest parts of our daily communication.
Although these things are not spoken still they convey huge information. According to the experts, body language makes up fifty to seventy percent of our all communication. That is why it is important to give importance and to pay attention to the body language.
Sometimes, a single action can give you so much information regarding another person. In this article, we will describe how you can interpret body language, so if you are interested to know more, read the article till the end.
Examine The Eyes
Eyes can reveal a lot about the person. While communicating, pay attention to the eyes as the movement of eyes indicates different meanings. Inability to make direct eye contact indicates the boredom or shyness especially when the other person looks away from you.
Also, check for the expanded pupil as when the other person takes interest in your conversation, his pupil dilates. Not just this, the blinking ratio of the eyes also tells a lot about what is running inside the mind of a person. In some cases, an increased blinking rate means lying.
Stare The Face
Though many people try to hide their facial expressions still you can get some important non-verbal clues by paying a little attention. One of the powerful gestures in body language techniques is a smile. But also keep in mind that smiles are of two types, a fake and a genuine smile.
An honest smile comprises the whole face while a fake smile engages only the mouth. Also, a genuine smile reflects that the person is happy and is enjoying your company, on the other hand, a fake smile suggests that he is just seeking approval or something else is running in his mind. While a half smile indicates the uncertainty.
Analyze The Proximity
The distance between two people is called proximity. While interpreting body language, pay attention to the proximity or how close or far is the person standing or sitting next to you. If a person stands or sits close to you then it indicates a good harmony.
On the other side, if you get closer to a person and that person moves away from you then it reflects that you do not have a mutual connection. The proximity tells a lot about the relationship between two people. But it is also essential to note that there are certain rules about the proximity in different cultures so it is not always the best indicator.
Check If The Other Person Is Copying You
It is also known as the mirroring phenomenon. In this, a person mimics the body language of another person. While communicating with a person, check if that person is mirroring you for instance, if you are sitting on a sofa and you put your arm on the back of the sofa to relax, wait for ten seconds and check if the person does the same or not.
One of the common mirroring techniques is sipping the tea, coffee or drink at the same time you sip. If someone is mimicking your actions then it is a good sign that he wants to establish a good rapport with you.
Notice The Movement Of Head
The rate or speed at which the people move or node their head while having a conversation with you indicates their patience or lack of patience. If a person is slowly nodding his head then it is a sign that he is interested in what you are saying and he wants to continue the conversation.
On the other hand, a fast nodding reflects that the person has listened you enough and he wants you to finish the talk, also he is waiting for his turn. Slanting the head to a side while listening reflects that he is interested in what you are saying while tilting the head backwards is a sign of uncertainty and the suspicion.
Notice The Feet
This is the important part of the body that reveals a lot of non-verbal cues as most often the people are so much focused on hiding their facial expression and the upper body positioning that their non-verbal cues are revealed through their feet.
While sitting or standing, the direction of feet indicates that where they desire to go. While talking if the person’s feet are directed towards you then it is a good sign that he has a favorable opinion of you.
Analyze The Hand Movement
Just like feet, the hands also reveal important non-verbal clues. While having a conversation, notice the hands movements of another person as putting the hand in the pocket or heads reflects the nervousness of that person.
While talking a person will direct his hand gestures towards the person he has a great affinity. While supporting the head with hands and with both the elbows on the table indicates the boredom. And if a person holds an object while talking, it shows a barrier in the communication.
Notice The Position Of Arms
If a person crosses his arms while talking to you then it indicates that he is using this gesture as a blocking or a defensive signal. It can also indicate anxiety or a closed mind.
