Colors are the important aspects of our lives which we see in our surroundings. Colors are everywhere and these are used to indicate warning, also, to notify others of certain information and colors can even affect the moods of people. This is the reason, teaching colors to your child are necessary for his development.
A child starts to recognize the colors from the age of one year so it is your duty to introduce the colors into play and learning procedure at an early age. It does not mean that you have to teach him at the age of one, you have to start around two years but it is completely normal if he needs more time.
In this article, we will describe how you can teach your child to learn colors, so if you are interested to know the fun activities, read the article till the end.
Child Educational Center
When we visit any child education center or toy shop we can see that they are very colorful places. There are many games, toys, and decorations of so many colors giving an illusion of rainbow to stimulate the child so that he can enjoy and learn happily.
Primary And Secondary Colors
In the Child Educational Center, you can also notice that they usually use bright colors to attract the children. Generally, these are primary and secondary colors.
By mixing any two of the primary colors, the secondary colors are generated. Usually, these two sets of colors are used for the children because they are not interested in any other shades of color. Children want to see bright colors which attract them and catch their attention.
It is because their recognition skills are not that strong to recognize the delicate shades of colors. That is why, you should not start with any other color except these otherwise, they may get confused.
You have to start really slow when it is about teaching your child colors. It means that you have to start with one color at a time. Also, ideally this color should be the primary color, commonly selected color is red. You need to be careful to select several objects of the same color and not having different shades.
Now present the toy to the child and tell him the color, for example, if you have a red bus say:
- “The bus is red.”
Do not say:
- “This is a red bus.”
This is because placing the adjective which is color in front of the object which is bus can confuse the child as he may think that the word red is also a portion of the real name of the object, not a color descriptor.
After you have taught your child the individual colors, now start to compare the colors. In this regard, find some objects that are of the same design and shape but are of different colors.
For example, you can use crayons or you can use plastic balls. Children start to differentiate colors at the age of three and you need to take lot of patience as it is not an easy task.
It is an amazing idea to use finger paints to help your child learn colors. Find pictures of usually a yellow duck or a big blue whale or a green tree. Now provide your child only with one color and ask him to paint the picture with his or her hand.
During this session appreciate him and keep repeating that which color he or she is coloring the picture. You can repeat the same thing on the next weekend with your child but with the different color also, playing with the doh is a splendid way to help learning the colors.
In the shops, many puzzle games are available where the child has to match up the colors. Sometimes, different colorful animals or object are used to help the child to learn colors. So let your child play with the puzzles and investigate but also help him and keep repeating the names of the colors.
One of the best basic puzzles is the colored buckets in which the child has to put the right color in the basket to win. You need to provide lots of appreciations when they do so.
Teach Colors With Food
Learning the colors while eating is another great way for the children. During the time you are teaching your child the one color say red, try to eat the food having that color i.e. apple. If possible you can use food coloring or food dye to make other foods of those colors.
Teach Colors With Clothes
Kids look adorable is cute dresses and it is another great way to teach them colors. In this regard, you can select a bunch of several dresses but make sure to have them of the same colors. Ask your child to put on the clothes of a specific color and he will enjoy choosing and putting on the items.
While doing this you can take a picture of him a show him later. Your child will start to become conscious of his own presence, so this is an excellent way to help him or her identify colors.
