Phobia is a type of anxiety disorder in people that include excessive fear of an object, place or situation. People with phobia usually overthink about the thing that causes fear and anxiety in them. It is persistent fear that can disturb the normal life working of people.

Phobia As Irrational Fear
People usually avoid the situation, object, place or animal that cause fear in them but when they face that thing, they can suffer from anxiety or excessive fear. Most people experience a particular fear, several fears or they can experience fear in specific situations.
Certain fears may prove dangerous or life-threatening for people when they become more repeated and episodic in people. But some phobias occur from the specific thing that is not really life threatening like a doorbell, a ringing telephone or fear of cockroach etc. Types of phobia are following.
Types Of Phobia In People
Impact of phobia can severe from normal to high range in people. People with phobia often realize their irrational and unreal fear but they can not do anything due to anxiety and stress about the thing, place, animal or situation.
Researchers show that 19 million American suffering from a phobia that stops them to live a normal life. Several factors play an important role to produce phobia in people. Genetic and environmental factors can also cause phobias.
Children who have a sister, brother or any relative with anxiety can suffer from a phobia. A person who takes a medical treatment can have a phobia. Phobias have many types. Some are following.
Claustrophobia is the irrational fear of closed spaces or having no escape from a small place. It often mixed with the Cleithrophobia that is the fear of being trapped in a short place. It also includes the anxiety disorder and people with claustrophobia can get a panic attack at closed spaces. Symptoms of claustrophobia are following.
- Panic attacks.
- Hot flushes.
- High blood pressure.
Aerophobia also called Aviophobia that is an irrational fear of flying either in the airplane, helicopter or any flying vehicle. People with this fear can not travel in the air because this phobia can prove life threatening for them.
Aerophobia has severe physical symptoms. It also includes other phobias like claustrophobia that is fear of closed spaces and acrophobia that is fear of heights.
Arachnophobia is the common type of animal phobia that includes irrational fear of spiders. It is the old and common phobia that exists in the western culture. Researchers show that this phobia results due to evolutionary selection. Symptoms of arachnophobia are following.
- Hot flushes or chills.
- Short breath.
- Pain and tightness in the chest.
- Tachycardia or irregular heartbeat.
- Butterflie’s sensation in the stomach.
Driving phobia also called vehophobia which include excessive and irrational fear of driving during traffic or on the freeway. People with this phobia cannot drive in these conditions. A person with a driving phobia can have other phobias. A basic phobia is an agoraphobia that can cause driving phobia in people.
Hypochondriasis or hypochondria is the condition in which a person worry about serious illness. Excessive worries can cause anxiety and depression in people. A person with this phobia can consider himself ill and then stress hormones released from the body in the condition of fear and depression that can cause a severe damage to the body.
Just like OCD, it involves obsessions. This phobia occurs from 4 to 6% in general medical conditions. Experts say that it is a real disorder and person can feel physical symptoms but he thinks himself as seriously ill and sick.
Agoraphobia is the irrational fear of specific situations or places. People with this phobia often have a fear of open spaces. They think that they will get a panic attack in public and no one can help them. Other people with this phobia think that they will have a medical emergency in a crowd or open space.
People with agoraphobia remain in the home and avoid to go in the crowd or open spaces. A person who suffers from chronic health problem can also have a fear of medical emergency in public.
Mysophobia is the fear of germs and pollution from anything. William A. Hammond in 1879 discovers this term when he was talking about obsessive-compulsive disorder and washing hands repeatedly. This phobia is also known as bacteriophobia, verminophobia, germophobia, germaphobia, and bacillophobia.
It is a pathological fear of germs that can stop a person to perform normal working and touching anything. Symptoms of mysophobia are following.
- Short breath.
- Irregular heart rate.
- Panic physical symptoms.
Cynophobia is the fear of the dog. This phobia is common in people. People with this phobia feel excessive fear from the dog and they cannot face the situation when a dog comes around them. The physical symptoms may arise that include sweating, fight or flight reaction, crying or shivering of legs.
Most people with this phobia have a traumatic situation or experience with a dog in the past. This phobia begins in the childhood and lasts for many years.
The world of glossophobia is derived from Greek world γλῶσσα glōssa which means tongue and φόβος phobos meaning fear or dread. Glossophobia refers to the fear of speaking in the public. It also called speech anxiety. People with glossophobia cannot speak in public and feel that their tongue become dread.
Researchers have shown that about 75% of the people in this world suffering from glossophobia or public speaking. People with this phobia have severe physical symptoms when they think about speaking in the public or in a group.
